High School students can be caught READING these days.
As part of the new FIXIT program at Webster City High School, students are reading more books at school.
FIXIT stands for Flexible Intervention for eXtra Instruction Time and is a program designed for all students to relearn materials, make-up formative work, complete summative assignments and get extra help. This is a common time during the day for all students. For students that don’t need extra academic help or time, they are engaged in Rec (free time) and Reading.
Rec and Reading times occur on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays—with each grade level scheduled for Rec one of those days and Reading for two. Rec is held in the PE Gym or the Auditorium, and Reading occurs in Advisory or the Café.
For Rec, students can be in the PE gym for volleyball, basketball and hacky sack; go to the courtyard; be on their phones and iPads; study; or relax and do nothing. For Reading, students must read during this time—books, magazines, newspapers, iPads, Kindles—because the purpose is to provide students with free time to read, which will also help them improve their literacy.
“It’s new, so there are a few system changes that we’re working on,” Principal John Elkin said. “But it’s going really well for students.”
World Language Instructor Melanie Cramer shared photos of students participating during the Reading time. She notes that even staff is required to read during this time.
“It is awesome to see everyone reading,” she said.
