Halloween Safety

Students at Pleasant View Elementary had two special visitors this morning.

Webster City Police Captain Tony Janssen and Officer Ed Wardell visited all of the classes.

“They educated students about Halloween trick-or-treat safety,” Pleasant View Secretary Meredith Mickelson said.

Students received many tips: walking with parents and staying close to them, keeping parents in sight at all times, walking on the sidewalk and never the street, never going inside a stranger’s house or getting close to a stranger’s car, yelling if a stranger tries to get a child to go with them, waiting to eat any candy until a parent checks through them first, eating only unopened candy, never touching someone’s pumpkin because there may be a candle inside, and remembering that police officers are around to help and protect everyone. Students were encouraged to smile and wave at police officers as they drive by.

Teacher Deb Dunham said the lessons went well.

“[The officers] discussed being with an adult, walking, having a flashlight, not eating the candy until an adult says, don’t go with strangers,” she said.

And as an added bonus, the officers gave treat bags to every student at the school, Mickelson said.
