1st Grade’s iPads

Students in 1st Grade are definitely getting the hang of their new iPads.

Teacher Josie Smock’s students are using iPads for Math Time.

“They are telling time, playing Everyday Math Top It, and counting coins,” she said. “[They are also] using their iPads for word work, journaling, and listening to stories.”

Below are photos of these technology whizzes.

Red Ribbon Week

Last week students at Sunset Heights Elementary participated in Red Ribbon Week.

“Our theme was Drug Free: The Healthy choice for me,” Elementary Counselor Jaime Davis said. “We have focused a lot on making healthy choices in PE, National School Lunch week, etc., so it tied in nicely.”

According to Davis, students learned about the dangers and unhealthy effects drugs and alcohol can have on their lives through lessons in classroom guidance as well.

“Our whole school also did a donation drive to collect items for UDMO (Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Inc.) to show that as citizens we care about our community,” she said. “We collected 19 boxes of items, which is a new record!”

Students also dressed up on certain days to coincide with the state’s Anti-Tobacco campaign.

“Students wore black on Tuesday, Red on Wednesday, Thursday was our PBIS dress-up day, and Friday was pajama day to ‘put drugs to bed,'” Davis said. “We emphasized that we celebrate RRW once a year, but our healthy choices will last a lifetime.”

Below is a letter that was sent home to parents with more information for parents about RRW.

Squirrel Behavior

We had some slightly larger-than-normal squirrels at Pleasant View Elementary a few days ago.

On Monday, November 4, 2013, 1st Grade students in teacher Rachel Chamberlin’s class learned about the different kinds of squirrels and their ways of getting ready and surviving through the winter, thanks to the new FOSS curriculum.

“These are pictures of my little squirrels searching for food,” Chamberlin said. “They had a blast.”

3 Little Pigs Play

Kindergarten students at Pleasant View Elementary recently had another field trip.

On Friday, November 1, 2013, all five sections of Kindergarten students visited Stephens Auditorium in Ames, Iowa, to see a performance of “The Three Little Pigs.”

“We compared and contrasted the play with the story we had read,” teacher Lisa Doering said. “In the play, the wolf was kindhearted and wanted to be friends with the pigs. Students had a great time, and we look forward to attending another play in the spring.”

Below are photos sent from Doering and Kindergarten teacher Deb Dunham.

PV’s Purple Lockers

Pleasant View keeps getting nicer and nicer for our students, and one more addition has been added to the school.

“Pleasant View is thrilled and we are showing our Lynx Pride with our brand new purple students lockers,” Pleasant View Elementary Secretary Meredith Mickelson said. “Students now have a neat area to keep their backpacks and coats.”

And there’s even an extra characteristic of these lockers to make them even more organized for students.

“With winter right around the corner, the handy area under the lockers will be put to good use for our wet and snowy snow boots,” she added. “Our hallways look amazing and so tidy since the lockers’ installment.”

According to Mickelson, teachers have personalized the lockers with magnets and other artwork with students’ names on them.

“Thanks, Webster City, for all of our upgrades and improvements at Pleasant View,” she said. “We love them! Go Lynx!”

WCMS Artsonia Page

Webster City Middle School art students are getting a lot of exposure, thanks to a great art website.

New art instructor Erica Munkel is making waves at the Middle School, thanks to her experience with the art website Artsonia.

“My students are extremely creative,” she said. “Artsonia is a great way for parents and students to talk about artwork outside of the classroom.”

According to Munkel, Artsonia is an interactive tool that she uses to create digital portfolios for each of her students.

“Each student will have images and artist statements for each piece of artwork they create throughout their entire middle school career,” she said. “Currently, WCMS is ranked #3 on the Artsonia site for middle schools in Iowa! Our rank continues to climb as we write more artist statements and submit more artwork.”

visitors

Parents, guardians, family members and friends are able to create accounts on Artsonia to access their student’s art.

“Once an account has been created, [these people] receive e-mail notifications each time a piece of artwork is posted and can make comments on the artwork,” Munkel said. “Our fanclub member numbers are growing each day!”

The students enjoy receiving comments, she added.

“It makes me feel good that my mom can see and comment on my artwork,” student Gavin W. said.

Student Emma B. agreed.

“I think it is a great tool for other people to see my artwork and the artwork of others,” she said.

“Since the students have received their iPads, we have been writing artist statements about their artwork on the Artsonia website,” Munkel said. “First, they downloaded a QR Scanner/Reader to scan specific codes for their artwork exhibits. Students scan the QR Code which directs them to the exhibit gallery where they are able to write artist statements discussing their artwork.”

Statements are then submitted to Munkel for her approval and uploaded to each student’s piece of artwork.

Below are photos of Munkel’s students scanning the QR Codes.

“Technology has been a wonderful tool to use in our reflection process as developing artists,” she said.
